Two charged in series of Cumberland burglaries

CUMBERLAND — Use of an allegedly stolen gift card Saturday at a local diner led to the arrest of two young city residents who have been charged in connection with recent burglaries in the city.

Late Saturday afternoon, the Cumberland Police responded to a local restaurant after being notified by the business that two subjects were attempting to use what was believed to be a stolen gift card to pay for their meal.

Upon their arrival, officers contacted a 17-year-old male Cumberland resident and a 20-year-old male Cumberland resident.

Investigators with the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I) were contacted and responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.

A search of the individuals resulted in the recovery of the stolen gift card. The card was verified as being purchased by a Cumberland resident who had been an earlier victim of a reported breaking and entering at their residence.

Along with the stolen gift card, the victims reported that numerous other items had also been stolen.

Investigators were familiar with a series of residential break-ins that had been occurring throughout the city of Cumberland, primarily on the north side.

With this new information, Investigators applied for and obtained search warrants for the two suspect’s residences. When the warrants were executed Saturday night, investigators recovered a large amount of stolen jewelry and collectible coins.

As a result, Investigators charged Brady Aaron Twigg, 20, city, and the 17-year-old juvenile, also from Cumberland, with numerous counts of burglary and theft.

Twigg was granted pre-trail release Monday when he posted $25,000 bond set in a bail review hearing in district court.

The juvenile is being held at a juvenile detention facility pending his next court appearance.

Investigators have positively identified the owners of a large amount of the stolen property.

Some owners have not been identified. Investigators are asking any victims who have had their residences broken into recently to contact the C3I Unit, at 301-777-0326, to make arrangements to view the property in an attempt to determine ownership.

The investigation is continuing by the Cumberland Police and C3I.
