Keyser OKs bids for fire station repairs

Structure only two years old

KEYSER, W.Va. — The Keyser Council unanimously approved two bids for repairs to the Keyser Fire Station 1 during its recent public meeting.

The council approved a $4,861 bid from HPG Overhead Doors for five door openings and a $9,115 bid from Service Master for mold damage repairs.

Multiple problems at the fire station, which was completed in the summer of 2011, have been ongoing. The fire station was flooded after the sprinkler system malfunctioned and city officials had previously said the sprinkler company refused to take responsibility for it. In May, the council voted to award a bid for about $18,000 to Custom Woodworking for water repairs at the fire station. When repairs started, the contractor found mold in the building. This stopped all repairs and mold damage repairs were put out on bid, according to minutes from Wednesday’s meeting.

Three bids were received; however, Shannon Marsh, city administrator, noticed the square footage was different on all three bids, according to the minutes. Marsh called all three bidders to ensure they were bidding on the same job and since Prestige Carpet Cleaning Inc. of Ridgeley did not show up, its first bid was dismissed.

Other issues with the fire station that have been fixed include a circulation pump on the hot water tank and the rear roll-up bay doors not functioning properly.

The prime contractor for the $1.6 million building was Harbel Construction, a subsidiary of The Belt Group.
