Maplehurst pays back assessments, avoids tax sale

FROSTBURG — A payment of back taxes owed by the Maplehurst Country Club was made Friday, saving the Frostburg landmark and its 18-hole golf course from being sold at tax sale.

“We paid the taxes today,” said Ron Kealy, president of the Maplehurst Country Club board of directors, on Friday.

Established in 1954, Maplehurst had been in jeopardy of going to tax sale this spring. The club had fallen delinquent in its real estate taxes to Frostburg and Allegany County back to 2010.

Kealy and other officials had been involved in negotiations to come up with an agreement to satisfy the tax debt.

“We did receive the county portion today,” said David Eberly, Allegany County administrator, on Friday afternoon.

Eberly said the Maplehurst officials paid the two oldest tax periods that were in arrears.

“They have paid what they were supposed to pursuant to the terms of the arrangement,” said Michael Cohen, Frostburg’s city attorney, who handled collecting the city’s portion of the tax debt.

Maplehurst officials were sent a letter from Cohen, stating a payment of $67,147.11 must be made before the close of business March 31 to satisfy the required tax and interest payments for the fiscal years of 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 delinquent to the city and Allegany County.

Although some disputes had arisen surrounding Maplehurst possibly being over-assessed in prior years, Kealy said the past due tax payments were satisfied Friday.

“It shows real commitment from the officers there and their efforts to continue providing services,” said John Kirby, city administrator for Frostburg.

Kealy also released a written statement on Friday titled “Maplehurst survives with hopes to thrive.”

“The course will be open for play on April 6th, weather permitting,” Kealy wrote.

Kealy also said that Maplehurst has a plan to reinvigorate the operation and listed many of the events and programs coming up.

“Payment of these taxes has, of course, cut deeply into their operating budget, but the members will work together, as their founders did so many years ago, to continue operating as an affordable and accommodating recreation and banquet facility,” Kealy wrote.

Kealy urged anyone with questions in regard to Maplehurst to call 301-689-6602 or send an email to rkealy@mindspring.com.
