Cause unknown in South End fire

CUMBERLAND — City and state fire investigators worked Thursday to determine the cause of an overnight fire on a rear porch at 135 East Mary St. that occurred while the residence’s occupants were asleep, according to the Cumberland Fire Department.

The incident was reported at 4:48 a.m. in a 911 call to the Allegany County emergency center by a neighbor of the property, prompting alert of city firefighters.

No injuries were reported in the residence where the occupants were awakened by city firefighters’ response.

A fire on a rear porch was extinguished utilizing a portable water extinguisher, according to Cumberland Fire Chief Donnie Dunn.

Burn marks were found on a rug on the front porch of the residence, Dunn said.

Damages were estimated at $500 to the two-story dwelling owned by Linda Cline.

Units were on the scene for more than an hour and investigators spent several hours at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation by Cumberland Fire Capt. Chris Ratliff of the city fire marshal’s office and Deputy Fire Marshal K. Nieberlein of the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Anyone with information in the case may contact the fire marshal’s office at 301-766-3888 or the Arson Hotline at 1-800-492-7529.
