Maryland DNR offices moving to Rocky Gap

CUMBERLAND — By next summer, portions of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources will have left the William Donald Schaefer Building at 3 Pershing St. in downtown Cumberland for offices at Rocky Gap State Park.

The first move takes place this week when the licensing office relocates.

“We will be closed Friday to move and will reopen Sept. 30 at the new location,” said Meghan Cadden, manager of the Western Maryland Regional Service Center.

The new location is the former park headquarters building at Rocky Gap immediately off Exit 50 of Interstate 68.

“There is ample, free parking right at the building,” Cadden said. Parking spots for access to the Pershing Street location can be difficult to find, Cadden agreed.

Cadden said 10 to 20 customers per day walk into the office to purchase licenses for hunting and fishing or to secure registrations for boats.

“We also have the universal disability passes, which used to be called hunt from vehicle permits,” Cadden said.

Beginning Monday, the address for the licensing office will be 12500 Pleasant Valley Road, Flintstone, MD 21530.

“The park headquarters moved into the new day use building in the beach area earlier this summer,” said Nita Settina, superintendent of the Maryland Park Service. “The move enables us to consolidate the staff within the park and improves our operations presence.”

The Forest Service will move from downtown Cumberland in the spring and the Wildlife & Heritage Service in the summer, according to Karina Stonesifer, associate director for WHS.

“We wanted to consolidate the DNR offices, and the DNR owns empty buildings along Pleasant Valley Road.”

Stonesifer said the Forest Service will move into a building directly across from the Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery.

“Wildlife will be in a building behind the park’s service facility,” Stonesifer said. A road that turns right off Pleasant Valley Road immediately past the former park headquarters leads to that structure.

“The parking advantage will be huge,” Stonesifer said.

The building on Pershing Street is owned by Allegany Museum. President Gary Bartik said Tuesday that he has tenants lined up for the offices that will be vacated.

Remaining in the building will be DNR’s Program Open Space and the Maryland De-partment of Agriculture’s Forest Pest Management office.
