Three charged in death of Slanesville man

SLANESVILLE, W.Va. — Three Capon Bridge residents were charged in connection with the homicide of Slanesville resident Michael F. O’Hara, including his estranged wife, Mandy Lee O’Hara, after his body was found submerged in the Cacapon River a few miles from his home.

The Hampshire County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call Thursday at 5:34 a.m. when a witness reported seeing a man lying on Hickory Corner Road and provided a description of a suspect vehicle in the area. Evidence led officers to Michael O’Hara’s home on Hickory Corner Road and to the recovery of his body.

Suspects were developed after speaking with an eyewitness and the victim’s family members. Police believe that O’Hara was stabbed to death at his home by Mandy O’Hara, 36, and John Steven Shoemaker, 21, before being dumped in the river.

The two suspects were taken into custody at their residence in Capon Bridge along with Gabriella Elisa Clutter, 21, who also lived there.

Evidence was recovered from their residence linking them to the crime scene in Slanesville.

Mandy O’Hara was charged with first-degree murder and burglary.

Shoemaker was charged with first-degree murder.

Clutter was charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

All three were held in the Potomac Highlands Regional Jail in Augusta.

Members of the sheriff’s office cleared the crime scene at 11:47 p.m. Further processing of evidence will continue for the next several days and the investigation is continuing. This was an isolated incident and there is no reason at this point to believe there are any other suspects, according to Chief Deputy Nathan Sions.

Assistance was provided by the Hampshire County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, Hampshire County Deputy Reserves, Slanesville Fire and EMS, County Coroner Penny Hartman, Capon Bridge Police Department and Hampshire County Office of Emergency Management.
