Newly hired correctional officer arrested in undercover drug deal

CUMBERLAND — A newly hired Allegany County correctional officer was arrested last week after he allegedly purchased Oxycodone from an undercover narcotics officer, according to Sheriff Craig Robertson.

William Eugene Smith, 26, of Frostburg, was arrested Thursday on charges of conspiracy of a controlled dangerous substance possession with intent to distribute, conspiracy of possession of a controlled dangerous substance (not marijuana), conspiracy of possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to deliver in a place of confinement and conspiracy in possession of contraband in a place of confinement.

Following the arrest, Smith was jailed at the Allegany County Detention Center without bond.

Bond of $10,000 was set in a bail review in district court that Smith posted for his pretrial release the same day he was charged.

Police said the detention center received information that “a newly hired correctional officer employee may be involved in illegal activity involving CDS.”

The sheriff requested assistance of the C3I Narcotics Unit to determine if the information was correct.

The narcotics unit conducted interviews and a meeting was set up with the correctional officer and an undercover narcotics officer at a local convenience store.

The correctional officer allegedly purchased Oxycodone from the undercover officer. The arrest was made at that time.

Robertson said Smith recently graduated from the Maryland Police and Training Correctional Academy and had worked at the detention center for the past three to four months. He was employed on routine probationary status for newly hired correctional officers prior to the arrest and is no longer working at the detention center.

The sheriff said the matter remains under investigation.
