CUMBERLAND — A premidnight fire Sunday destroyed a 2.5-level home at 842 Greene St., according to Cumberland Fire Marshal Lt. Shannon Adams who spoke via cell phone from the dwelling’s basement Monday as he investigated.
“I’m thinking it started in the basement, but we are still looking,” Adams said at 9 a.m. “The home is a total loss.”
Adams was trying to establish ownership and names of renters. “Nobody was home at the time of the fire,” he said. “The rental company that handles the house is Chestnut Flats. I have a couple calls into them, but they may be difficult to reach since it is the holidays.”
Cumberland’s firefighters were assisted by volunteers from Bowling Green and Ridgeley. Adams described the residence as having a concrete finish, similar to many older homes in that neighborhood. Homes in that block are typically situated up a steep bank on the south side of the street.
Partial collapses within the structure were making the investigation a bit more difficult, according to the fire marshal.
Firefighters were alerted at 10:44 p.m. Sunday and units cleared the scene at 4:49 a.m. Monday.
