Mount Savage water project nearly finished

Residents urged to prepare to connect

MOUNT SAVAGE — With the $8 million Mount Savage water project nearing completion, county officials are urging residents to prepare to connect to the system.

The project is 75 percent complete and final completion is scheduled for the spring, according to a news release. “It is now time for residents to make final arrangements to connect to the new county system,” said Allegany County Public Works Director Paul Kahl.

Approximately 100 residents have already completed the hookup process. Another 150 residents have been notified that they can now hook up to the system. About 80 residents who live on the east side of New School Road must connect to the new system by Dec. 31 as a portion of the old system will be shut down. County staff hand-carried a final hookup notice to these residents. “We are doing everything we can to make sure water service is not interrupted during the transition period from the old system to the new. It is now important for the residents to do their part and make arrangements to connect to the new system,” Kahl said.

The county has completed an extensive public outreach effort throughout the course of the project. Residential hookup instructions were discussed at four community meetings along with several mailed notices. Financial assistance to complete hookups is available to qualified homeowners. Contact David Nedved with the Department of Economic and Community Development at 301-876-9513 for more information.

The project was designed by the Department of Public Works and involves the installation of approximately 58,000 feet of water line with 450 house connections. It also provides a 294,000-gallon water storage tank, master meter vault, two pressure-reducing stations and the rehabilitation and replacement of defective sections of the 40-year-old sanitary sewer system.

Funding is being provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development, Maryland Department of the Environment, and Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development.

Questions can be directed to the Department of Public Works at 301-777-5942.
