Romney may soon be aglow with street lamps of yesteryear

ROMNEY, W.Va. — Street lamps reminiscent of those in a Thomas Kinkade painting will be lining Routes 50 and 28 in Romney in the near future if agreed to by the Romney Council.

The project is the brainchild of Romney High School Alumni Association member Phyllis Messick.

“I’ve been talking about this for five years. I recently made up my mind I was going to do it,” Messick said.

The old Romney High School has been gone since 1963 when Hampshire High School was built.

“I wanted something that would say we’ve been here. Something that won’t be torn down,” said Messick.

She said the she felt the lamps would be a good venue by which those attending the old school could be remembered.

The lamps Messick has chosen are LED solar-powered lights, wrought iron and will stand 97 inches high. The lamps will be installed about every 50 feet along Main Street and a portion of Route 28. A total of 50 lamps are needed.

“They cost $275 including shipping,” Messick said.

“I thought if every class would buy a lamp we could line Main Street with them.”

The plans are to attach a plaque to each lamp designating the name of which class donated it.

“Maybe the businesses in town would also be interested in purchasing a lamp,” Messick said.

She said people could purchase a lamp in memory of a loved one or for an event.

The lamps will match lamps being installed in Celebration Park next to City Hall.

Funding for the lamps in Celebration Park is coming from a grant received from Delegate Ruth Rowan.

Mayor Dan Hileman said the council has not yet approved the project. “It must be presented to council before any equipment acquisition and installation can be made. I would guess that council will approve the project so long as there is no cost to the city.”

Messick has set up a bank account for anyone wanting to sponsor a lamp.

“Please send checks to RHS Street Lighting, 339 W. Rosemary Lane, Romney, WV 26757,” Messick said.

“I’ve talked to a lot of people and everyone seems to think this is a good idea.”

Messick said she has already received several orders.
