State Highway works hard to reopen flooded roads

CUMBERLAND — High water, mud slides and debris kept State Highway Administration working various weather-related road calls Thursday night into early Friday.

“SHA responded to several weather-related issues last night in the LaVale, Cresaptown and Bel Air areas of Allegany County,” said Heather Keels, SHA District 6 and 7 community liaison.

One of the first road closures took place on U.S. Route 220 at Howard Street at about 7:30 p.m., followed by the closing of Route 53 (Winchester Road) at 8 p.m., due to debris in the roadway. It was reopened at 9:30 p.m.

On Warrior Drive at Cresaptown a SHA field office trailer was destroyed.

“The field office for a bridge rehabilitation project on Warrior Drive was flooded and will need to be replaced,” said Keels. However, the project was not affected.

SHA noted that information about weather-related closures and other closures and traffic information is available by dialing 511 or visiting www.md511.org. Information is also available on the Department of Transportation Coordinated Highways Action Response Team website at www.chart.state.md.us.
