Post 13 clinches Mtn. District crown

Sweep of Post 214 gives Fort Cumberland title

Cumberland Times-News

CUMBERLAND — Sean Collette started Fort Cumberland’s day off with a lead off home run in the bottom of the first inning, and Post 13 would roll on to clinch the Mountain District by sweeping Grantsville Post 214 Saturday in a doubleheader at Legion Field.

Collette would go on to add a single in a 4-2 opening game win. The second game would end as close as Fort Cumberland scored eight times in the fifth inning to win 11-1.

Chandler Tomlinson allowed just three singles, all in the fifth inning, in a complete game win. Both of the runs he allowed also came during the fifth on a two-run single from Trey Beasom.

Cody Ellsworth added two doubles and a run batted in for Post 13, and Scott Rice added a RBI.

Grantsville provided the first inning power in game two when Jason Ashby hit a solo home run, but that would be all of the offense it would get.

Rice pitched all five innings of the shortened contest and got five strikeouts. He added a double and a single at the plate, and Jeff Conley hit a double. Chandler Tomlinson and Cody Jeffreys both had a RBI double.

Beasom added a double for Post 214.

After falling behind in the top of the first, Fort Cumberland countered with three runs in the bottom half. It then exploded or eight runs in the fifth to force the 10-run rule.

Fort Cumberland moves to 8-1 in the Mtn. District and is 16-7-1 overall. It will meet Grantsville again on Thursday, this time at Garrett College, for a 5:30 doubleheader.

CUMBERLAND — Aaron O’Rourke struck out 10 batters to lead Fort Cumberland to a 4-1 win in the first game, and Post 13 needed eight innings to win the second, 7-6, as it collected its first sweep of the season in a doubleheader with Morgantown at Legion Field.

O’Rourke allowed just three hits, all singles, to go with his 10 strikeouts. He helped his cause at the plate with a RBI triple, and Travis Conley added a two-run single.

Fort Cumberland took the lead with a pair of runs in the third, but Morgantown halved the lead in the sixth. Post 13 bounced right back with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Buck had two of Morgantown’s three hits with a couple of singles.

Kevin Hupe had the game-winning RBI in the nightcap when he scored Demetreous Taylor on a sacrifice fly. Hupe also had a double. Ethan Landis had three hits, two doubles and a triple. Post 13 used eight hit batters to score its seven runs.

Fort Cumberland (3-6) will play a doubleheader with Martinsburg on Saturday at Legion Field. The teams will also finish a rainout game from this past Saturday.
