Serendipity strikes again! This time it has led three friends to a voyage of the heart. One day Selena Thompson, Cindy Lin and I shared the desire to bike the C&O Canal to Georgetown.
Cumberland has so many opportunities for recreation and adventure. Biking the canal is at our doorstep, but seemed reserved for tourists with bountiful time.
For each of us, the desire to make the trip was easily overshadowed by the imminent needs of others. But as we discussed it, the idea began to seem more tangible. This would be a chance for us to enjoy a trip full of scenery, history, friendship, and fitness.
With the help of our children's fathers, we carved out several days in May for the trip. As we looked at the route and discussed strategies and logistics, we got more excited about our adventure. What had taken us so long to pursue this?
The idea to use our trip as a fundraiser arose, and we debated about what local charity to support.
After considerable research by Selena Thompson, we decided on the Make-A-Wish Foundation¨ of the Mid-Atlantic to support a local child's dream as we pursued one of our own. What we learned about this charity was inspiring, and touched our hearts, as anyone who has nursed a sick child can identify with.
Funds raised during our 185-mile biking trip will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation¨ of the Mid-Atlantic to help fulfill wishes for deserving local children facing life-threatening medical conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and pediatric AIDS. With $7,000 being the average cost of a wish, we need the support of the community of Cumberland to help make wishes come true for these special children.
We hope to encourage you to find an adventure of your own and support the adventure of another. After all, health and dreams are best when nurtured and shared.
