Reporting child abuse, neglect can save a life
To the Editor:
April was National Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month. Throughout the country, communities sponsored events to raise awareness on this issue. It is estimated that an average of four children die every day as a result of child abuse and neglect. Although most situations are reported, there are many more that go unreported, resulting in children not being protected.
No group of children is immune from abuse. It affects children of every age, race, and income level. It often takes place in the home and is committed by a person the child knows, such as family member, caretaker or babysitter.
Often abusers are people caught in stressful situations: young mothers and fathers unprepared for the role of raising a child, overwhelmed single parents, with no support system, parents with alcohol and/or drug problems, and families placed under stress by poverty, divorce, work demands, money worries, or illness.
The impact of child abuse and neglect is far greater than its immediate effects. These experiences can shape a child's development and have consequences that last years, even a lifetime. It has been shown by research that the effects of child abuse and neglect not only impact the family but the community as a whole. As adults, children who have experienced abuse or neglect have an increased chance of criminal behavior, involvement in violent crimes, alcohol and/or drug addictions, as well as becoming abusive themselves.
If you suspect abuse, reporting the situation can protect the child and get help for the family. You can contact the Allegany County Department of Social Services at (301) 784-7122, law enforcement agencies, or the 911 emergency number.
You should have this information available: child's name, address, and details as to why you believe the child is being mistreated. In addition, give the suspected abuser's name and address too.
You may report anonymously, but it may be more helpful if you give your name to the agency. There are times when follow-up information may be helpful in determining whether or not abuse has occurred. Determination of abuse and neglect is based on the State of Maryland COMAR Regulations.
As a community, we all need to play a positive role in protecting children. As we all know, children imitate the behavior of adults, so it is important that we serve as positive role models for them, because it is equally important to remember that children surrounded with secure relationships will become confident, caring adults ready to be a contributing member to society.
