FFA, 4-H members preparing for fair deserve your support

To the Editor:
Cumberland Times-News

I am writing in hopes to raise the awareness of individuals and businesses in the community of the need to support our young Future Farmers of America (FFA) and 4-H members.

The Allegany County Fair is just around the corner, July 19-25. Many FFA and 4-Hers will be exhibiting and showing animals at the various livestock shows during this week.

These children put a lot of time, work, and effort into raising and caring for these animals. They look forward to spending the week at the fair and enjoy the attention that they and their animals receive.

At the end of the week, the FFA and 4-Hers sell their animals. This year the Allegany County 4-H/FFA Livestock Sale will be held July 25 at 5 p.m. at the Allegany County Fairgrounds. Any support from the community will be greatly appreciated by the FFA and 4-H members.

The Allegany County Extension Office has a website concerning the specifics of the sale. This site is http://allegany.umd.edu/files/

LS%20Sale.pdf.

If you have any further questions, you can contact the Allegany County Extension Office at (301) 724-3320.

Remember, the support that you give these young youth, who are learning by doing, is very important and rewards them for learning responsibility, record keeping and farm management.

As a former 4-Her, I can not say enough good things about these organizations or about the opportunities that they offer to the youth. Both organizations build strong character traits and life skills for the youths’ future. Please consider bidding or purchasing animals July 25.

If you haven’t supported these organizations in the past and would like to see the work that these individuals put forth, please visit one of the livestock shows or visit the livestock barn any time during fair week.

I am sure that there will be an FFA or 4-H member present to answer any questions that you may have, and I am sure they would love to show you their animals.
