Paper carrier’s kindness to bird family appreciated

While drafting a letter intended for the editorial page (re: WV Stats on Deaths by Poison), I withdrew from that controversial, depressing topic to get a breath of fresh air.

What I saw on my porch prompted the attached expression of delight — associated with the kindness of your own staff.

As it stands, my attached poem and note of thanks may not make sense. Let me explain what Dennis and Kimberly did to preserve a vulnerable place in nature, along with its occupants.

What happened was this: When I made my 4th move in less than three years as an area resident, I called to give my address change and renew my valuable subscription to the daily newspaper.

I told Dennis that a pair of beautiful finches were in the process of building a nest in my Times-News newspaper box, and asked if he could instruct the carrier to toss the paper on the porch.

He assured me that this would be done; and the carrier soon called me to promise likewise.

I would like Kimberly Spiker to be recognized for her consideration and excellent customer service.

My residence is rural, and off the main road, but Kimberly unfailingly delivered my paper each morning at 1:30 a.m. She also has a day job, raises a family, and works at another job until 6 p.m.

I will get back to my more serious letter discussing a topic of great concern to me: the rise in suicides, and the need for more attention to mental health problems plaguing our region at an alarming rate of occurrence.

Vague obituary notices often lead to speculation, and most folks shrug them off by saying, “Well, he was a drunk and a drug addict.” I hope to call upon community leaders, pastors, and ordinary “God-fearing” citizens to stop labeling and blaming others for a lack of compassion and support that could save many young lives.

God the Architect

Birds the Builders

I missed the moment today, when they flew away –

A family of wild finches who’d lived in my newspaper box.

Their stylish nest – built mostly by the lively female bird,

Assisted by her mate, who carried the heavier pieces — sits empty now.

Together they made their home and carried for each other.

She sat long on the three speckled eggs, while he brought juicy grubs and fought off trespassers.

The babies’ mouths were filled, their destiny fulfilled.

God is surely pleased this day with the wonders of His creative works.
