Off-duty city paramedics may have saved reader’s life

To the Editor:
Cumberland Times-News

I am writing in response to the Mayor and City Council’s recent proposal regarding the Cumberland Fire Department.

Last winter I was forced to call 911 for one of the first times of my life. I was in severe respiratory distress and barely able to communicate with my daughter, who arrived at my house prior to 911 being contacted.

Although a volunteer squad had responded, it was after a second alert went to them before they arrived at my house with a Basic Life Support Unit. My neighbor, who is a registered nurse, contacted Civil Defense again, informing them of my condition and rapid deterioration, insisting that a paramedic be dispatched.

I remember her telling me how helpless she felt not able to administer the care I needed. Although five minutes seemed like 20, three Cumberland city paramedics who were off duty arrived at my house and began starting IV's, giving me medications through my IV and placing a BiPap (machine to help you breathe) on me.

Once I arrived at the emergency room I was actually breathing better and was able to talk as well as wear oxygen in my nose, which was not supplying enough oxygen to me when 911 was called.

I understand that volunteer means volunteer, and I am very appreciative and thankful to all that serve at a volunteer fire department as it takes from their lives as well to serve the community. Had these three men not responded, I may not have been here today.

I have since learned they also volunteer at other fire departments other than their paid jobs, and I am sure glad they do!

I have also learned that Allegany County has paid paramedics that report to volunteer fire departments, Monday through Friday during the daylight hours, they would not have been able to help.

Although I do not live in the city of Cumberland, I am grateful everyday for the three Cumberland Fire Department paramedics that took the time to respond to my emergency. They went above and beyond their call of duty — serving the community and saving my life.

THEY are my heroes and I want to say thank you again. I hope the Mayor and City Council, continue to evaluate their current proposal regarding the re- organization of the Cumberland Fire Department as it is not only needed in the city of Cumberland but the surrounding areas.

We need not to cut budgets but focus on saving lives as this is what they did for me and obviously have a great passion in doing as paramedics.

With much appreciation,

Jesse Simmons
