Which ‘people’ should be in control? The majority who won?

To the Editor:
Cumberland Times-News

Ronald W. Maiers writes in the Oct. 18 Times-News that it is time for the people once again to take control of America. This raises the question of exactly who is now in control of America. In a democracy, when the majority wins, it can be assumed that the people are in control. Thus, the people were in control when Obama was elected, when Bush was elected and when Clinton was elected.

However, Mr. Maiers states that it is time for “the people to take control.” Exactly who are ”the people” he wants to put in control? How will they take control? The majority won control in the last election, but maybe Mr. Maiers doesn’t like majorities or elections. Is he proposing revolution? Like the Russian Revolution, or maybe the French Revolution, or a new American Revolution?

Mr. Maiers suggests that something to revolt about is that Obama sold us out to China. It wasn’t Obama or Bush or any other politician who forced the people to buy all those Chinese goods they couldn’t pay for, which is how we got “sold out” to the Chinese.

We are a democracy so when we want to buy Chinese, we can buy Chinese. Now, when we have sold ourselves out to the Chinese, Mr. Maiers seeks to blame Obama, or maybe some other politician. He should stop looking for someone to blame, and look in the mirror instead.

Mr. Maiers further suggests that one of our problems is the “insurmountable growth” of our economy. Some people think the problem is that the economy is shrinking.

Before we begin any new revolution, I think we should at least be able to agree on the exact nature of our problems and what to do about them. Not paying taxes and/or reducing the size of government will not solve our problems. Look at California where the Tea Party people have been successfully at work for some years. The whole state will soon be bankrupt.

On the other hand, Mr. Maiers blames Obama for driving the entire country toward bankruptcy by spending too much. It appears that whatever we do, bankruptcy is a likely outcome. When “the People” take back control of this country, I hope they know what they are doing.
