They use the hatch-marked spaces because they must

To the Editor:
Cumberland Times-News

Several days ago I noticed a letter to the editor, explaining the use of handicapped parking spaces (“Don’t park in handicapped spaces unless authorized,” Oct. 19 Times-News).

My wife and I are in our 80s and she has trouble with her legs. We have had a handicapped card for over 10 years. During that time I have often parked in hatch-marked spaces. I have never seen a sign that indicated that I was parked illegally. With the size of the passenger side front doors, these days, it is not easy to help someone out of the car while still holding on to the door so it doesn't scratch the car parked next to yours.

So, I hope, anyone who is interested, will do as I did: contact the State Police and ask about the regulations. Although I understand the problems about the hatch-marked spaces, there are usually two sides to every question. I'll continue to park in any space that is marked for handicapped parking.
