It’s not a way of life; help should go to those who need it

To the Editor:
Cumberland Times-News

I am writing in regards to an article in the Cumberland Times-News on Nov. 3 (“Half of U.S. kids will get food stamps, study says,” Page 2A). To the lawmakers, deadbeats and system abusers in our society, I am appalled and outraged by the number of children on food stamps.

Even though we are in the middle of an economic crises in America, there are many who are taking advantage of our system. This system was designed to help people get back on their feet — not become their way of life!

My wife and I both work full-time jobs, which I thank God for every day. We go home, work in our garden and raise our livestock to provide food for our 3-year old-son and my 81-year-old grandmother. Everything we have we work hard for, with no handouts from anyone. I feel that the rest of America should be doing the same thing.

Teach your children to work for what they want, not stand there with their hands out expecting the government to take care of them! Lawmakers need to put a time-frame on all of this free living and stop handing out the taxpayer’s money like it is candy.

We should be helping the truly disabled people, senior citizens and the veterans who fought for this country. These are the people who really deserve it!
