Agencies who help the disabled can’t afford more budget cuts

To the Editor:
Cumberland Times-News

We are writing in response to the article that was on the front page of the Times-News Nov. 2, entitled “Non-profits hit hard by state cuts.”

We protest any further budget cuts to the following agencies that serve individuals who suffer from developmental or intellectual disabilities in Western Maryland: Ray Of Hope Inc., Service Coordination Inc., Spectrum Support, and any/all other agencies located in Maryland, who provide the same services.

The individuals that receive services through residential, day program, outreach, or respite care need and rely on these services, to help and ensure that their everyday life is one filled with joy, happiness, safety, and overall good quality of life.

Most of the individuals cannot function on their own, without the help from the state funding. Most of their families that are involved are not equipped to handle their family members financially, emotionally, and physically, without the funding and agencies such as Ray Of Hope Inc.

The individuals require qualified/ trained staff to assist them everyday, and having more cuts will limit the amount of training staff can receive.

All of the developmentally disabled programs in Maryland, as well as across the country have one thing in common, and that is to “provide quality care, and ensure that they are respected as anyone should be.”

We hope that anyone who has a child or family member who suffers with developmental or intellectual disabilities will call or email the governor and Delegate Kevin Kelly’s office, and write letters stating their opinion or story as to why they should cease any further cuts.

We believe we can make a change and be a voice for individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities, who aren’t able to do so on their own.
