Code Home Rule gives us a chance to control the rulers

Kevin Spradlin’s story, “‘Something’s going on with the sheriff” (Nov. 7 Times-News, Page 1A), has caused me to write.

Delegate Leroy Meyers suggested that perhaps we would like to give up Code Home Rule in favor of state legislative rule. I would like to make the point that with Code Home Rule it is easier to control three commissioners than to try to control the General Assembly.

Our local delegates make up only a tiny portion of the House of Delegates, so that our local wishes may not always turn out the way we want. If we do not like the way the commissioners govern, we have complete control with our own vote at election time and can throw them out ... or not.

As to whether or not we completely understand Code Home Rule may not be as important as being able to control the rulers. I don’t think we should be giving power and control back to the state.

I think if we have the chance, we should take back more control.
