To the Editor:
Springtime in the mountains brings so many wonderful concerts — school, church, community groups — that it is literally impossible to attend them all.
And, with so much outstanding music being made it may seem unusual to review one concert, but the spring choral concert at Allegany High School on May 21 was an extra special event.
The program began with a lovely solo by soprano Vanessa Young. The concert choir followed with several of the most beautiful a cappella arrangements of all time. “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” arranged by Moses Hogan was perfectly balanced and set the high standard for the entire program.
I recall singing this gorgeous arrangement — in college many years ago. Susan Zoller added her always reliable flute solo to the piece. Soloists and show choir rounded out the first half with Broadway tunes and special choreography.
The second half featured a medley from Les Miserables with projected scenes and opportunity for soloists. We enjoyed hearing many memorable melodies.
Mrs. Jackie Wadsworth is to be commended for such a remarkably well sung concert! And, it was presented right on the heels of their run of the Broadway musical “Tarzan.”
Plus she found time to learn a new piece of music by Allegany alum Norman Scribner to provide the solid foundation for a performance with the band in between her regularly scheduled concerts.
It is because of the kind of dedication displayed by Mrs. Wadsworth that we can expect great things from her students for many, many years to come. Thank you.
