Frostburg keeping its promise to improve communications

One of the most important commitments this mayor and council made was to improve communications with our citizens.

Towards that end this summer, Commissioner Brian Alderton supported by senior staff, especially Elizabeth Stahlman, have made great strides at improving the usefulness of our city website and getting the city involved in using social media (FaceBook and Twitter).

Our new city website, created by Ms. Stahlman, will use the same web address of www.frostburgcity.com, however it will be far more effective in conveying important information to residents, businesses and visitors.

In addition and no less important, it will be far easier for the city staff to update and interconnect with our new presence on FaceBook and Twitter.

The city of Frostburg will still use the resources of the Cumberland Times-News for stories about city meetings, programs and special events. We will still advertise our public hearings and help wanted ads in the Times-News.

We will also continue our efforts to reach our citizens through FSU TV-3, both their scrolling boards for our monthly meeting schedule and their broadcasts of our monthly city council meetings.

When possible we will use the resources of WFWM, Public Radio for Western Maryland and the various commercial radio stations located in Allegany County.

We will also send city information in the quarterly utility billings to our 2,400 water/sewer/garbage customers.

The point to all these various communications methods is that reaching our residents with timely and accurate information has become much more complex and time consuming in the 21st century.

The mayor and city council will continue to work with our staff to do all that we can do, using all the available and cost effective tools available.

However, if all else fails, citizens can always join us for the monthly city council meeting on the third Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. in the Frostburg Community Center, 27 S. Water Street.

We make time at each meeting to hear from citizens and answer their questions.

W. Robert Flanagan

Mayor, Frostburg

  • Remember, we’re not immune to extinction

I’d like to pose a theoretical scenario to Cal Thomas.

If a medical specialist said, “Cal, you’ve got a serious physical problem. Do nothing and you’ll die soon. Follow my prescription, which involves certain life-style changes, and there’s a good probability you’ll live, even if your life may be a bit more constrained than now.”

  • Tell legislators to do what is right for America’s vets

Without our veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice, where would America be today? It is anyone’s guess, however certainly not the Freedom and Liberty we enjoy.

Have you noticed, in your travels, that the front end of a police cruiser usually protrudes a bit more than you would expect when the officer has it parked behind another vehicle on the side of the road?

An open letter to the electrical power companies in West Virginia and Maryland:

  • Scare tactics, misinformation abound regarding marijuana

In response to Frank J. Clark’s well intentioned letter, “Don’t be too quick to legalize marijuana use,” July 10 Times-News), I believe that his letter misses the point of legalizing and regulating marijuana.
