Support local businesses that want to provide recreation

I have enjoyed reading the letters from Thomas Conlon (“Why not give Canal Place to the National Park Service?” Sept. 24 Times-News) and Robert Kauffman (“What’s the best vision for the Potomac River?” Sept. 4; “City needs to reconnect with Potomac River,” Sept. 24) and the wonderful article of the grant to Greater Cumberland Airport (“Cumberland airport gets $2.3 million FAA grant,” Sept. 14).

The greatest assets for Cumberland to Paw Paw, W.Va. are our airport and the Potomac River.

This will make it possible for those living outside of our jurisdiction to come and visit and explore the beautiful area of Cumberland to Paw Paw.

There are many great wonders in this region from the train ride to view the fall colors to camping in our National Park and explore the Paw Paw tunnel.

Many come to visit this region but where can one rent a canoe or kayak to explore the Potomac River.

There is not one business around that I have found for someone to rent a canoe or kayak, park their vehicle at the Paw Paw boat ramp, be taken up to the Oldtown boat launch and canoe back to their vehicle.

I heard that the brothers who own the recycling center in Paw Paw had a vision of making the old tannery place into a campground with rest room facilities and showers, electric hook ups and campfire pit.

I hope the state of West Virginia will assist with their game plan. We need this in our area. Along with rentals of canoes and kayaks.

It is time for everyone, even children, to write their representatives and support the ideas of these local businesses to bring recreational business to our area.
