To the Editor:
Cumberland Times-News

Cumberland — We hope you plan on joining us for our opening night concert featuring Ricky Howsare for our Shoes for Orphan Souls.

This will be our 15th year of collecting NEW shoes and socks for shipment to needy children in 76 countries including the United States.

If you have been entertained by Ricky you will want to hear him again, if not we encourage you to come and see this young man from Bedford. The concert will be on June 27, starting at 7 p.m. Come early to get an aisle seat.

While the concert is free we encourage you to bring a pair (or two) of new childrens shoes, or if you prefer, a cash donation will allow us to purchase shoes for you.

If you wish to purchase the shoes, Payless Shoes in the Mall will offer a discount if you tell them the shoes are for SOFS. Also, Chic-fil-A in the Mall will sponsor a Spirit Night on June 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. During this time a portion of your purchase will go to SF05 if you mention it during your purchase.

Grace Memorial Community Church (GMCC) is the local collection point for these shoes and we are celebrating our 15th year. Thanks to the folks in this area we collected 3043 pairs of shoes last year, and in the past 14 years we have collected 41,379 pairs of shoes and 21,075 pairs of socks.

Since 1999 Buckner International has distributed 2,759,882 pairs of shoes to needy children around the world. We have donated 150 pairs of shoes to a local school for needy children right here in Cumberland.

We know that this small gift gives a child a sense of protection as well as ownership and the feeling that someone out there loves them.

We sincerely hope you can make the Concert and be entertained by Ricky, but if you cannot and would like to be a part of this worth-while project, you may send a check to GMCC at 1005 Bishop Walsh Road, Cumberland, MD 20502, and we will gladly purchase the shoes for you. If your gift is by check, please mark it “Shoes for Orphan Souls.” Remember the date (June 27 at 7 p.m.). We hope to see you there.
