To the Editor:
It is certainly time that our federal, state and local officials do something to address the ongoing problem of bomb control. Bombing has taken the lives of too many of our fellow citizens over the years.
Over the years, we have had the Weather Underground, the Unabomber, the Oaklahoma City bomber and some unsuccessful Islamic extremists, including the LAX bomber, the shoe bomber and the Times Square bomber. Of course, most recently we’ve had the successful Boston Marathon bomber.
It is time to consider “common sense” bomb control measures? Do we really need military-style “assault” bombs that serve no purpose for hunting — their only purpose being to kill humans? Should we close the bomb show loophole and the Internet sales loophole? It is time for universal background checks on all bomb purchases?
Perhaps it’s time to rethink the tired, old response of bomb enthusiasts: ”If you take the bombs away from the law abiding citizens, only the criminals will have bombs.”
