Contradictory these positions may be; they’re entitled to them

— In my June 21 letter to the editor, “They’ve had time to bring jobs to Allegany County, but failed”) I said that according to the U.S. Census the median household income in the state of Maryland is $72,419 but that in Allegany County it is only $39,408.

I blamed the current county commissioners for their lack of job creation and said, “I believe that they have failed us.”

Responding in a July 8 letter (“It is only the private sector, not government, that creates jobs”), Judith Weller of LaVale, said the following, “Kevin Shaffer doesn’t understand that government does not create jobs.”

So, I did some research, to see whose side my good friend and delegate, Kevin Kelly, would come down on, regarding this issue of whether we should hold our elected leaders responsible for job creation.

In an August 2010 Times-News article (“Candidates for District 1B discuss issues, track records”) it reported that, “Kelly said it’s difficult to guarantee he will recruit more or better-paying jobs to Allegany County. That’s not what a lawmaker does, he said.”

“I can’t promise jobs. It’s tough,” he said, proving Ms. Weller’s position.

Then in a February 2011 Times-News article (“Kelly looks to jump-start local economy”) it reported that, “Kelly wants to bring together political leaders, economic development organizations, and business and labor leaders to come up with new ideas, and if needed, legislation to jump-start the county’s economy.”

“This is about jobs, jobs, jobs,” Kelly said. “We’ve got to be aggressive and try new things,” said Kelly, proving my position that government elected officials can help with job creation.

Ms. Weller is entitled to her position that government does not create jobs.

I am entitled to my position that job creation should be the top priority of state and local government elected officials and we should hold them responsible when they fail.

I guess that Delegate Kevin Kelly is entitled to both positions, contradictory that they may be.

  • Remember, we’re not immune to extinction

I’d like to pose a theoretical scenario to Cal Thomas.

If a medical specialist said, “Cal, you’ve got a serious physical problem. Do nothing and you’ll die soon. Follow my prescription, which involves certain life-style changes, and there’s a good probability you’ll live, even if your life may be a bit more constrained than now.”
