Decade of the Fifties/Sixties reunion planned Aug. 23-24

We’ll celebrate our 10th annual Decade of the Fifties/Sixties over the weekend of Aug. 23-24.

Originally seen as simply the “50s,” we’ve unofficially welcomed youngsters who graduated high school during the “60s” at the past couple of events, but the time has come to merge the two eras into one singularly offered activity.

Learning from our previous nine gatherings, our opportunities to reunite with friends from our high school days are precious and not to be ignored; we’ve watched as, year by year, former classmates have become slower in their actions, disabled by infirmities or, sadly, have passed on.

Wiser now, and regretting the fact these reunions didn’t begin sooner, we’ll suggest members of area high school graduating classes from 1960 through 1969 seek their counterparts, make plans, and attend this festive celebration.

Registration begins at 4:30 p.m. at Mezzo’s on Aug. 23 in the former Elks Lodge at 114 South Centre Street. That will provide a name tag, making it easier to identify your friends from yesterday as you stroll the mall.

Signing in will provide data enabling others to note your presence; you might also enroll to receive regular internet updates regarding things of interest in the community.

Classes are encouraged to arrange their own mini-reunions over this magical weekend; those from the 50s delight in that portion of their get-togethers. If I can be of any assistance, contact me at (301) 724-3868.

  • Remember, we’re not immune to extinction

I’d like to pose a theoretical scenario to Cal Thomas.

If a medical specialist said, “Cal, you’ve got a serious physical problem. Do nothing and you’ll die soon. Follow my prescription, which involves certain life-style changes, and there’s a good probability you’ll live, even if your life may be a bit more constrained than now.”

Without our veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice, where would America be today? It is anyone’s guess, however certainly not the Freedom and Liberty we enjoy.

  • Move over Move over

Have you noticed, in your travels, that the front end of a police cruiser usually protrudes a bit more than you would expect when the officer has it parked behind another vehicle on the side of the road?

An open letter to the electrical power companies in West Virginia and Maryland:
The return of electrical power to my home recently, after its unexpected failure for approximately 48 hours, as a result of such a sudden and violent storm, reminded me anew of how much I take for granted.

  • Scare tactics, misinformation abound regarding marijuana

In response to Frank J. Clark’s well intentioned letter, “Don’t be too quick to legalize marijuana use,” July 10 Times-News), I believe that his letter misses the point of legalizing and regulating marijuana.
