Here are a few hints on how we can improve local tourism

— The tourist season is upon us. I would ask what has been done to update or improve the quality of a visit to Allegany County.

I have a few suggestions as follows:

1. Guided canoe trips to Spring Gap. Bike back to Cumberland.

2. A longer trip to Oldtown. Bike back to Cumberland.

3. All day trip to Paw Paw. Bike back to Cumberland.

4. Clean sludge from Blue Bridge and provide canoe or row boat rentals. Include dining and picnic areas.

5. Contact Noah’s Ark Church to see what can be done to finish the Ark and bring in international visitors.

6. A dinner boat on the Potomac River above the Blue Bridge.

7. Floating July 4th display on the Potomac River.

8. Fireworks display from top Lover’s Leap.

9. A tram ride on the Tow Path and along the Rails-to-Trails trail. (Same as Ocean City tram on Boardwalk.)

Might I suggest a small committee be appointed to dream up some new ideas to help our current and future Tourism Bureau attract more tourists?

Tourism is no different than any other business: just implement activities that will make folks want to return.

After more than 50 years of being in business, in which a part of every day was spent planning how to improve or generate new business, I believe the same tactic can successfully apply toward building local tourism.

  • Remember, we’re not immune to extinction

I’d like to pose a theoretical scenario to Cal Thomas.

If a medical specialist said, “Cal, you’ve got a serious physical problem. Do nothing and you’ll die soon. Follow my prescription, which involves certain life-style changes, and there’s a good probability you’ll live, even if your life may be a bit more constrained than now.”

Without our veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice, where would America be today? It is anyone’s guess, however certainly not the Freedom and Liberty we enjoy.

Have you noticed, in your travels, that the front end of a police cruiser usually protrudes a bit more than you would expect when the officer has it parked behind another vehicle on the side of the road?
