It’s not fear-mongering, but something based on facts

Stephen R. Pottle (“It’s time to start drilling,” Feb. 9 Times-News) accused me of fear mongering in my Feb. 1 letter (“Here’s what the Marcellus Shale gas drilling looks like”).

I would ask Mr. Pottle to watch the documentary films, “Gasland 1 and 2” and follow the myriad of news reports concerning the lives of homeowners, after fracking has started throughout their communities.

The entire letter was based on factual accounts, the heart breaking stories of paradise lost for many families.

For a former EPA administrator to claim that no drinking water has been contaminated by fracturing operations, when both West Virginia and Pennsylvania are filled with stories of well water contamination, makes one question the purpose and function of the EPA.

There may be a time to extract gas from the Marcellus Shale. A time when gas companies are honest, upfront and operate according to regulations. Regulations put in place by officials who simply look at the science and reality, and not the copious amounts of dollars fracking generates.

Like so many dangerous things, fracking benefits only a few, a tiny percentage of the total population. It reminds me of the old Native American proverb, “When will you realize that money cannot be eaten?”

Sadly, you can’t drink it either.

  • Remember, we’re not immune to extinction

I’d like to pose a theoretical scenario to Cal Thomas.

If a medical specialist said, “Cal, you’ve got a serious physical problem. Do nothing and you’ll die soon. Follow my prescription, which involves certain life-style changes, and there’s a good probability you’ll live, even if your life may be a bit more constrained than now.”
