To the Editor:
Hillcrest Cemetery has a tiny chapel sitting atop the hill. It is called the Singing Tower. But it doesn’t sing. Further, it cannot be used at all, as it is locked and stuffed with things unknown.
I remember some years ago that I sat in that chapel just prior to my grandfather’s burial. It was a tiny, quiet place. I never heard the tower sing Maybe it hasn’t played for a long time. I don’t even know if it is a bell or a chime.
But, I remember feeling I was in a reverent place. Six years ago with my father’s passing, I was appalled at the tower’s condition. I tried to get the company now responsible for operations to attend to repairs. I am still looking for a way and, obviously, no repairs have been undertaken nor information made available.
According to their website, the owners are the “second largest deathcare organization in the country.” I would like to think the owners’ business acumen includes a plan to maintain the tower structure and enhance the property’s appeal to future clients and investors.
However, when I saw the Hillcrest facebook page with a picture of the cemetery’s still shabby and shuttered Singing Tower ... I decided to sing.
