GOP runs Supreme Court and House, but Obama’s a dictator?

Here we are in the sixth year of President Obama’s tenure and the hatred of him is still as intense as ever. Although he was elected twice by a majority of the American people, nothing ever seems to be enough to lessen the anger and contempt expressed by so many.

The latest accusations are that he is a dictator who is undermining our democracy and who has contempt for the constitution. Perhaps we need to put things in perspective.

President Bush, his predecessor, had 112 signing statements in his first term and 50 in his second. President Obama had 22 in his first term.

Are signing statements constitutional? I don’t believe they are, but it is up to the conservative majority on the Supreme Court to weigh in and they haven’t. Executive orders? George Washington issued 8, Grant 217, Woodrow Wilson 1,803, Clinton 364, George Bush 291 and Obama 172 (as March 6).

Once again the Supreme Court can challenge any of them, like they did when Harry Truman ordered the steel mills to come under temporary federal control. They negated Truman’s order and he had to comply.

We have a Republican-controlled House of Representatives and a Republican-controlled Supreme Court and yet we are told that President Obama is a dictator threatening our democracy.

We rank 37th in the world in health care. Tens of millions have spent the better part of their lives without access to any medical treatment other than the emergency room. Countless people have been holding their breath until they reach 65 and can participate in socialized medicine called Medicare.

Along comes the Affordable Care Act, which is a cave-in to the private insurance industry, and, because our government makes demands on insurance executives who have been dictating to hospitals, doctors and we the patients for decades about who they will treat and what treatments they will pay for, suddenly our freedom is being eroded and President Obama is a dictator.

Sorry! Don’t buy such nonsense, and I won’t be satisfied until all Americans have a right to healthcare and health insurance companies and their billions in profit are a thing of the past.

Other attacks on Obama center on the conviction that he is a socialist out to fundamentally change our country.

Let’s see. We have the stock market at an all time high; the rich are getting vastly richer; Wall Street executives have the majority of positions of influence in the White House and in Congress.

Well! If this is socialism, why is Ayn Rand, smiling in spite of her torments in hell?

As I have said before, President Obama will leave office with a fortune waiting in book deals and speeches. He will live a life of comfort and wealth while so many of his detractors continue to struggle with low wages, poor retirements and the many social problems that come from a society where the super rich control the media and the economy.

Fox News is their best friend because they have convinced so many to turn on their own rather than on their oppressors.

  • Remember, we’re not immune to extinction

I’d like to pose a theoretical scenario to Cal Thomas.

If a medical specialist said, “Cal, you’ve got a serious physical problem. Do nothing and you’ll die soon. Follow my prescription, which involves certain life-style changes, and there’s a good probability you’ll live, even if your life may be a bit more constrained than now.”

Without our veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice, where would America be today? It is anyone’s guess, however certainly not the Freedom and Liberty we enjoy.

Have you noticed, in your travels, that the front end of a police cruiser usually protrudes a bit more than you would expect when the officer has it parked behind another vehicle on the side of the road?

An open letter to the electrical power companies in West Virginia and Maryland:
The return of electrical power to my home recently, after its unexpected failure for approximately 48 hours, as a result of such a sudden and violent storm, reminded me anew of how much I take for granted.
