Letters

November 25, 2013

Who are these people, and is what they are telling us true?

The Times-News regularly publishes letters “supposedly” written by Gerald Bernstein and Calvin Cowan.

These letters usually tell the readers of the supposed dangers of eating meat and the supposed evils of those who raise animals for food.

I say they “supposedly” write them because of something I discovered after reading the letter signed by Bernstein entitled, “It’s the meat industry, not Halloween, that is scary”.

I routinely check out several different papers from around the country. A few days after Bernstein’s latest submission I noticed a letter in one of these papers with a title close to that given Bernstein’s.

I checked and found it was the exact same letter with the exception that it was signed by another man. A Google search turned up over 50 papers this letter ran in.

Knowing that Cowan writes letters on the same subject I did some checking on his latest one, entitled, “October is the ‘food month,’ especially for vegetarians.”

In checking I found this letter in over 50 papers. The papers these two letters ran in were from all over the country, from Anchorage, Alaska to St. Augustine, Florida and pretty much all points in between and even London, England.

I checked over four dozen copies of these letters and they all had the same thing in common. They were all signed by different men!

One might wonder why these men would lie about being the writer of a letter. Well, most papers will not publish “form letters,” especially if they are from a organization that seems to have an agenda.

By having supposedly local people submit them and claim to be the writer an organization can deceive editors and are able to get their propaganda printed. Given the willingness to lie about who really writes these letters, why should we believe any of the statements, facts or figures that they claim are true?

With Thanksgiving approaching we can probably expect another form letter from Bernstein or Cowan.

Perhaps this time instead of their usual anti-meat propaganda they will tell us the individual or organization that really writes these letters and who is behind the attempt to deceive the editor of the Times-News, it’s readers and other members of the public from all across the country.
