Thanks to the doctors for the inspiration and care they give

National Doctors’ Day is held every year on March 30 in the United States to celebrate the contribution of physicians who serve our country by caring for its citizens. This year, March 30 falls on a Sunday.

I would like to take this opportunity, on or before National Doctors’ Day, to honor all of the physicians serving the patients and residents of Golden Living Center of Cumberland.

We are truly appreciative of their commitment and the leadership they demonstrate every day in meeting the healthcare needs of our patients, their families and our staff.

The work that physicians do in our living center can sometimes be overlooked but these physicians are a core part of the care that Golden Living delivers to this community.

Successfully taking care of a short-term rehab patient working towards transitioning back to home, caring for patients with complex health conditions, or caring for individuals with end-stage conditions on a day-to-day basis rarely makes headlines.

But for many physicians in our community, it is the inspiration of seeing the positive difference that they make in the quality of life for our patients and residents that makes their long hours of dedication worthwhile.

In particular, I would like to thank our medical director, Dr Peter Halmos, and our assistant medical director, Dr. Sunil Gupta, along with supportive physicians Dr. Huma Shakil and Dr. Shiv Khanna, for the vital role they play in advocating for our patients and promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Please join me in recognizing and thanking these unsung heroes for all that they do.

Mary Schriver, executive director

Golden Living Center of Cumberland

  • Remember, we’re not immune to extinction

I’d like to pose a theoretical scenario to Cal Thomas.

If a medical specialist said, “Cal, you’ve got a serious physical problem. Do nothing and you’ll die soon. Follow my prescription, which involves certain life-style changes, and there’s a good probability you’ll live, even if your life may be a bit more constrained than now.”

  • Tell legislators to do what is right for America’s vets

Without our veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice, where would America be today? It is anyone’s guess, however certainly not the Freedom and Liberty we enjoy.

  • Move over Move over

Have you noticed, in your travels, that the front end of a police cruiser usually protrudes a bit more than you would expect when the officer has it parked behind another vehicle on the side of the road?

  • Citizens should be more ready to deal with power failures

An open letter to the electrical power companies in West Virginia and Maryland:
The return of electrical power to my home recently, after its unexpected failure for approximately 48 hours, as a result of such a sudden and violent storm, reminded me anew of how much I take for granted.

  • Scare tactics, misinformation abound regarding marijuana

In response to Frank J. Clark’s well intentioned letter, “Don’t be too quick to legalize marijuana use,” July 10 Times-News), I believe that his letter misses the point of legalizing and regulating marijuana.

Perhaps our society should consider some facts before jumping on the bandwagon for legalizing recreational marijuana use.
