To the Editor:
Can someone please tell me why this so called great country of ours can’t or won’t help out one of its own citizens?
On a daily basis we hear stories in the news of how the United States brought someone from another country to the United States to give them free medical care. But when one of our own needs the help both the doctors and the government just turn their backs or play pass the buck.
I am a 43-year-old female newly diagnosed with thyroid cancer. I was given the diagnosis on Nov. 20, 2012. I am unable to work due to other medical issues along with the cancer.
I have neither medical insurance nor the means to go private pay to find a doctor. Because of this I cannot acquire a doctor so that I can begin treatment.
I have tried every avenue there is to achieve this. I have applied for disability and my case is pending an appeal through a lawyer. I have applied for medical assistance only to get the runaround on that too.
I have been told that my case is backlogged in Baltimore with the state review board. I personally don’t see why it even went to the state review board when my primary care physician filled out the required paperwork stating that I am disabled.
I have been able to acquire PAC but that only covers visits to the primary care physician and medications.
I have also qualified for 100 percent financial assistance (medical) through Western Maryland Health System but that only covers the hospital part of the bill.
I have been told that I qualify for Allegany Health Right but none of the doctors that I have contacted will take me on as a patient.
So this leaves me with having to go to Morgantown, W.Va. This causes another problem in that I do not possess the means to travel to and from Morgantown for appointments.
Plus Morgantown won’t even process the application for financial assistance until they get either an acceptance or denial letter from the state review board on whether I can get Medicaid.
So can anyone tell me what a person is to supposed to do to get medical treatment for a very serious medical condition when everyone keeps saying no.
I need this help now as I don’t know how long the cancer has been there before the diagnosis or if it has spread. There is also the fact that the longer you go without treatment when you have cancer the worse the prognosis can become.
