September 17, 1787 — A woman known well to Benjamin Franklin, a certain Mrs. Powell of Philadelphia, shouted out, “Dr. Franklin, what kind of government have you given us?”, to which he replied, “You have a Republic, madam, if you can keep it.”
I bring this to your attention not to talk about The Constitution, or how our elected officials blatantly disregard their oath to uphold The Constitution. You can probably find many examples on the other pages of this paper.
Rather, I ask you to consider how are the interests of Western Maryland being represented in Annapolis? Yes, we go through an electoral process where we elect our delegates and senator.
They go to Annapolis and they represent us. But in the end, our representatives’ petitions go unheard and or unheeded. We wind up paying a tax to flush our toilets. We have our unalienable rights of self-protection stripped away.
We pay more for fuel, but are told we can’t pursue sources of energy in our backyards unless it is of the style that is a blemish to our pristine mountain ridges. We even have our legislative district gerrymandered so that our voices are further made mute.
I could continue, but you get the picture.
This is not an indictment of the Western Maryland delegation. The purpose of this letter is to get you to consider this.
If our representatives are not able to make our voice heard due to the flaws, failures, and tyranny of the government in Annapolis, is it not time for us to exercise our rights as spelled out in The Declaration of Independence and the Maryland Declaration of Rights and form a more perfect union as proclaimed in The Constitution?
Now, follow me a bit further. The Western Maryland Initiative is being piloted by Scott Strzelczyk from Carroll County.
The Western Maryland Initiative seeks to have the five western counties; Carroll, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett secede from the state of Maryland and form a new state that would be admitted to the Union as the 51st state.
In this new state, you, as a citizen would actually have greater influence in your state government, and your state government would be accountable to you much the same way your county and city government are accountable to you.
History has shown that a little (r) republican form of government that is best is one that is small, limited, and accountable.
Instead of being dragged around by the wallet by Prince George, Montgomery, and Baltimore Counties, the citizens of Oakland, Cumberland, Hagerstown, Frederick and Westminster would actually have a say in how their representatives engage in legislation, regulation, and governing, and to what degree.
Or think of it this way since pop culture tends to reflect real life: After the Battle of Endor in “Star Wars VI, Return of the Jedi,” the Rebel Alliance restored the New Republic based on the principles of the Old Republic.
We have the tools in place to do just that. Blasters and light sabers can remain holstered and sheathed for now, and the Death Star will still reside in Annapolis. It will, however, be neutralized.
I strongly encourage you to stay tuned in and informed. Currently, most information is on line at a Facebook page called Western Maryland: A New State Initiative. Also, you can reach them by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
As may have been said a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, “Republic, you have, Madame, if keep it, you can. Herh, herh, herh.”
