Plan to establish bike lanes is both absurd and dangerous

As you are aware, I am delegate to the General Assembly whose district includes the Bedford and Frederick Street areas of Cumberland. Additionally, I am a former long-time Bedford Street resident. Presently, and for a number of years, I have resided adjacent to Bedford Road.

With this as background, I take this opportunity to note I extensively drive Bedford and Frederick Streets on a daily basis.

From my years and years of traveling Bedford and Frederick Streets I am extremely familiar with “habits” of motor vehicle drivers, bicyclists and those who park their vehicles alongside these high volume traffic roadways.

From these ongoing Bedford and Frederick Streets daily commuting experiences and on behalf of my Allegany County constituents who travel these Streets, I take this opportunity to express my unqualified opposition to the absurd and dangerous proposal to place bike lanes on Bedford and Frederick Streets.

For an array of reasons, which I would welcome the opportunity to discuss with you, I firmly believe the placement of Bike Lanes on Bedford and Frederick Streets is a BAD IDEA and should not be implemented.

Finally and in conclusion, I totally agree with the Cumberland Times-News editorial, “Bike lanes: Residents of Frederick and Bedford streets not happy” (Feb. 24).

Sincerely yours,

Delegate Kevin Kelly

I’d like to pose a theoretical scenario to Cal Thomas.

If a medical specialist said, “Cal, you’ve got a serious physical problem. Do nothing and you’ll die soon. Follow my prescription, which involves certain life-style changes, and there’s a good probability you’ll live, even if your life may be a bit more constrained than now.”
