To the Editor:
I am a veteran. Please don’t thank me.
I just needed a job. It was a plus that I hoped it would do some good — defend my country, preserve American ideals, keep the world safe.
I didn’t know. No one warned me otherwise. Maybe I wouldn’t have believed it anyway. I was young, caught up in the marketing campaigns. “Be all you can be.” Blah, blah, blah.
Now “the War on Terror” is destroying our country. American ideals wither away. Militarism poisons society. More countries are attacked. More death, more suffering, more mindless cheerleading, more faith in the religion of power, exercised at home and abroad.
We go over there. But the spirit of war is growing here. Perpetual war. Astronomical, crippling debt. The corporate state run amuck. Where will it end? What will it take before we awaken? And will it then be too late?
Maybe one day we’ll be able to just defend ourselves and American ideals ... if there are any left.
