Donating your old bike will help someone who really needs it

To the Editor:
Cumberland Times-News

— Once again Bikes for the World is collecting used bicycles at Canal Place,  May 25 from 10 a.m. to noon,

This event, held yearly for the last 10 years, has netted over a thousand bikes, collected here and shipped overseas. We are also collecting used portable sewing machines.

The Western MD Wheelmen and the Cumberland Rotary provide in-kind and volunteer support for this program.

With sustainable partnerships with non-profits that benefit low-income communities in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean our community can make a global economic impact.

By donating your bike you can help to train people to re-condition bikes. By donating your bike you are are making it available at an affordable price to someone who can can really benefit from it.

Our brochure says it all. “Overseas, a bike can get someone someplace — like from poverty to self-sufficiency.”

To think that giving away a bike (that I no longer want) will help someone get needed health care, create a business, or get to school, to me, is an amazing win-win situation. Hope to see you Saturday.
