To the Editor:
I grew up in Cumberland and have a mail subscription to the Cumberland Times-News. I just read “Fed and dead: Bear killed after repeated contact with humans” on the editorial page on July 9.
The article mentioned the bear had been walking around the town (Westernport) for about a month. I don’t understand why the Natural Resources Police had done nothing for 30 days.
I hate to see an animal senselessly killed especially based on some stupid individuals feeding him. It also mentioned that Harry Spiker fired a drug dart, but the drug did not work at all. Why did he not fire a second dart or try to trap the bear?
The NRP had 30 days to do something about this beside killing the bear. Sounds like the NRP took the easy way out rather than trying to explain this bear was left to wander for 30 days.
