Hosting Fresh Air Children can be a memorable experience

I got a phone call, and a little voice said, “Hi Miss Linda, I’m calling to wish you a Happy Mother’s Day.”

This was Tyrick, my 7-year-old Fresh Air child from New York City. I was so pleased to hear from him, and it meant even more on this special day. He politely inquired about my family, and I his.

I told him how I was looking forward to his visit in July. He said that he was too. Actually, I know that both of us have thought of the other all year long. Knowing that someone cares and being able to anticipate that next visit lifts your spirits immensely.

If you would like to share your life for one week (July 2-9) or two weeks (July 10-24), there is still time to sign up. You can choose a girl or boy from the ages of 6-12.

The purpose of the Fresh Air Fund has been the same since 1877: to give inner city children of New York City some new and different summer experiences.

Choose to make a difference in someone’s life. It will make a big difference in yours too.

The recent Times-News editorial raising questions about the mandatory secrecy of the Footer Dye Works bids is spot on in my opinion.

  • President and Obamacare: Who needs Congress?

Being a fellow from a small town like Cumberland I don’t always really understand what’s going on in Washington. But I have watched a few houses being built over the years. I even helped some with one house, but my brother fired me from that work pretty quickly, mainly because it was his house being built.

  • It’s a secret It’s a secret

Could someone enlighten us about why not even the names of the two entities bidding on development of the Footer Dye Works building can be divulged?
A Times-News article about the bids included an explanation from a lawyer for the attorney general’s office about the need to keep the names and other information secret at this time. Despite that, the logic of not divulging at least a little more information escapes us.
