TEA Party Caucus to conduct second candidates’ forum

— “Nothing is more essential to the establishment of manners in a State than that all persons employed in places of power and trust be men of unexceptionable characters. The public cannot be too curious concerning the character of public men.” — Samuel Adams

And with that opening note of encouragement from Samuel Adams, it is with great pleasure that the Allegany County Conservative TEA Party Caucus will be holding our second candidates’ forum to be held this Sunday, May 18, at the Woodmen of the World Lodge, 801 Virginia Ave., Cumberland. The doors will be open at 2 p.m. and the forum will start at 3 PM. The public is invited to attend.

The candidates will be limited to those running in the primary election for their respective party for the House of Delegates, seats 1B & 1C, as well as candidates for Allegany County Commissioner. Invitations were sent to candidates from both parties, and I am pleased to announce that candidates from both parties have responded that they will attend the forum.

Maryland’s primary elections will be held June 24, and candidates for the House of Delegates as well as for county commissioner are running for their party’s nomination to face off in the general election to be held Nov. 4, 2014.

This year’s primary elections are of great interest this year as we have several new faces on the scene as well as some familiar names jockeying for new positions.

This forum will serve as an opportunity to discern the character of these public men on what they have accomplished as well as what they intend to accomplish if elected and how they will do it.

I cannot stress enough, the importance of these local elected officials to you. Sure, the candidates running for federal office may have more prominence, but in the grander scheme of things, we have little say or influence with them.

The closer that elected official is to you, the greater your influence will be. Those running for commissioner or for the House of Delegates are our neighbors, our friends, or someone we do business with. We may see them at the grocery store, a ball game, at church, or at many of our favorite restaurants.

My point here is that we have ready access to them and so we can talk with them one on one more readily than reaching out to our congressman or senator and having a staffer send a standard response several weeks later that addresses nothing.

We also face some challenges when it comes to politics in Western Maryland. What is important to Allegany County tends to be dismissed in Annapolis and our commissioners are challenged with attempting to address those issues along with whatever else Annapolis dictates or withholds.

You need to take the opportunity to find out who is vying to speak and act for you.

Please plan to come to this event. You are able to follow us on Facebook at Allegany County Conservative TEA Party Caucus or at our website, http://alleganyteaparty.com.
