Drivers caught talking on cell phones should go to jail

Oct. 1, 2013, cannot get here soon enough for me. Law enforcement officers will have the authority to stop and ticket drivers for talking on their cell phones without using a hands-free device.

Drivers will be fined $75 for their first offense with the penalty increasing for each subsequent citation. Hallelujah!

To the girl in the big black truck coming down Cumberland Street who yielded the right of way to the driver on the other part of Cumberland Street on the morning of Sept. 23, 2013, I applaud you for at least acknowledging that vehicle.

What about mine? I was coming up the Market Street bridge and clearly had the right to go forward to my destination on Johnson Street.

Was it the cell phone glued to your ear that caused you not to pay attention?

Thankfully I have good reflexes and was able to brake in time to avoid the collision. And then you had the nerve to give me a dirty look as if I were in your way. Shame on you.

This is not the first time something such as this has happened to me and I know it won’t be the last.

Fortunately this was a residential area and the speed limit is 25 MPH.

I propose that persons caught using cell phones while driving receive a penalty of 48 hours in jail. That would make them less likely to do it again.

  • Remember, we’re not immune to extinction

I’d like to pose a theoretical scenario to Cal Thomas.

If a medical specialist said, “Cal, you’ve got a serious physical problem. Do nothing and you’ll die soon. Follow my prescription, which involves certain life-style changes, and there’s a good probability you’ll live, even if your life may be a bit more constrained than now.”

Without our veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice, where would America be today? It is anyone’s guess, however certainly not the Freedom and Liberty we enjoy.

Have you noticed, in your travels, that the front end of a police cruiser usually protrudes a bit more than you would expect when the officer has it parked behind another vehicle on the side of the road?
