To the Editor:
I read the letter written by Ruth Clark (“Wealthy residents could build homeless shelter,” Aug. 28 Times-News) with her ending statement, “Do something to help others instead of spending money to build lavish things for yourselves.”
You must be drinking “Obama’s water.” It has a bitter taste to it.
First of all, Ms. Clark, you need to be educated. We have those who lost their homes and now homeless due to the fact they took out a second mortgage and could not pay it back.
Second, we have those who will lie and steal, even from their own mother, to pay for a drug habit.
Third, we have those who chose to live on the streets, like “Wolfman” and he was so well-known in Washington, D.C., when he passed away, The Washington Post did a story on him.
We do not need more homeless shelters, we need affordable housing to get people back on their feet.
We need programs to help them with their finances. We need to teach money management in the second or third grade, not high school. We need to better prepare our children to weather out a financially storm. We need to teach everyone not to believe in all the hoopla from Wall Street and be extremely careful how you invest.
Last, many confuse mental illness and homelessness. We do not need homeless shelters for the mentally ill.
Depending on the severity of mental illness. we need places from apartment building with a mental clinic within it for those who can function but with some assistance to housing those who are incapable of functioning like an assisting living facility.
If we all thought like you, we would be living in a social country and the way Obama is running this country we are heading there because he has followers like you.
