From Staff Reports
Cumberland Times-News

FROSTBURG - A Barton resident died after his vehicle slammed into the back of a street sweeper Tuesday morning.

Memorial Hospital officials pronounced 46-year-old David Allen Smith dead following the 9:20 a.m. crash near Shaft. Two passengers, Naomi R. Smith, 43, and a 17-year-old boy also were taken to the hospital for injuries they sustained after the family's truck struck a 1993 Ford street sweeper they were following, police said.

According to Maryland State Police, the accident occurred when David Smith, who was operating the truck westbound on Cabin Run Road, struck the street sweeper operated by Melvin D. Gibbs, 56, of Lonaconing. Gibbs, who was cleaning the road surface at the time of the accident, was not injured, according to Cpl. D.L. Frank, who investigated.

Frostburg Area Ambulance responded with two units along with Georges Creek Ambulance, volunteer fire companies from Shaft, Frostburg and Clarysville, and Maryland State Police Medevac helicopter, according to the Allegany County 911 Joint Communications Division.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
