Girl sustains burns in Piedmont fire

PIEDMONT - A 7-year-old girl sustained minor burns to her face Monday morning when the bedding in one of the bedrooms at 117 Erin St. in Piedmont caught fire.

According to Assistant Fire Chief Tim Jackson of the Tri-Towns Volunteer Fire Department, firefighters from four area companies an-swered the 9:50 a.m. call at the Agnes Price residence.

"We believe it was accidental in nature," Jackson said, noting that fire damage was confined to one of the bedrooms while smoke damage was sustained throughout the two-story structure.

As the burned youngster was taken to a neighboring home to await an ambulance, firefighters were able to pull mattresses and other smoldering bed clothes from the home, avoiding further spread of the blaze.

"They had a quick knock-down," Jackson said.

"There was probably around $10,000 in damage," he said.

Family member Fred Price said later Monday afternoon that the 7-year-old had been treated for superficial wounds and was back home.

The fire, he said, was confined to a spare bedroom.

"There was some loss, but it could have been a lot worse," he said.

Firefighters from Potomac Fire Company No. 2 of Westernport, Bloomington and Barton responded to the call, as did Tri-Towns and Keyser EMS.

According to the Mineral County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, all units had cleared the scene within approximately 2 1/2 hours.
