Hampshire candidates seeking seats

ROMNEY - Two Republicans will be vying in the primary election for the right to challenge Hampshire County Commissioner Donald P. Cookman, a Romney Democrat, in the general election in November.

Charles "Skipper" Price of Springfield and David R. Parker of Romney are looking to unseat Cookman.

Also in November, Democrat James H. Method of Romney will seek to unseat Hampshire County Sheriff Nathan J. Sions, a Republican from Romney.

Sheriffs in West Virginia are subject to term limits; two full consecutive terms or a full term and part of another consecutive term preclude their running for a third term. If a sheriff has served two terms, he must sit out for a term before running again.

Augusta Democrat Assessor Frank Whitacre's challenge will come in the primary from Norma J. Wagoner, also a Democrat from Augusta.

County Prosecutor Ste-phen W. Moreland, a Democrat from Romney, has no challengers, nor does county Surveyor Richard "Rick" Moreland, a Romney Democrat.

Hampshire County Magistrates Shirley A. Timbrook of Shanks and Eugene T. Billmeyer of Romney, both Democrats, are being challenged by Republican Jentry "Chuck" Shanholtz of Green Spring.

In the nonpartisan race for board of education, Bernard H. Hott of Points and Linda J. Baker of Romney will defend their seats against a challenge by David Spurling of Bloomery.

Only two members from the same district can hold seats on the board. Winners are determined in the primary election and take their seats July 1.
