Allegany water, sewer projects to benefit from federal funding

CUMBERLAND — Water and sewer projects in Allegany County communities will benefit from $12.2 million included in the federal 2009 Omnibus Appropriations Act, which was signed into law this week.

Sen. Barbara Mikulski, a member of the Senate Interior, Environment and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee, announced the funding that supports several Maryland priorities, including Chesapeake Bay programs and water and sewer projects.

The bill includes funding for the following water and sewer projects:

• $300,000 to design and construct nutrient removal facilities at the Georges Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant.

• $300,000 to construct separate storm water and sewer lines in Cumberland.

• $300,000 to construct separate storm water and sewer lines in Frostburg.

• $300,000 to replace two drinking water transmission lines in Hagerstown.

Funding for Chesapeake Bay programs includes:

• $8 million to support projects that implement the most innovative, sustainable and cost-effective strategies for reducing nutrient runoff.

• $2 million to support community conservation strategies to preserve and restore tributaries in the watershed.

• $1 million to provide public access to the watershed.
