Driver injured in I-68 wreck

CUMBERLAND — A Baltimore man was cited for being at fault Wednesday after his refrigerated box truck struck another box truck on Interstate 68 that had pulled onto the shoulder, Cumberland Police said.

Thirty-four-year-old Ebin R. Ruano was taken to Memorial Hospital by a Cumberland Fire Department ambulance following the 10:06 a.m. mishap that occurred on westbound I-68 just east of the Maryland Avenue exit.

Ruano reportedly suffered minor injuries. No information was available concerning his medical condition.

Police said Ruano was traveling westbound when his truck struck another box truck that had pulled off when the driver made a cell phone call seeking directions. The identity of the second driver, who was not injured, was not available.

Upon impact, the Ruano vehicle continued traveling westbound before it struck the guardrail and then flipped onto its side. Ruano was removed from the vehicle by Maryland State Highway Administration workers who were first on the scene.

The Ruano vehicle was carrying a load of frozen seafood that remained in the vehicle, police said.

Police cited Ruano for failure to control speed to avoid a collision.

City police also investigated a two-vehicle accident that occurred about an hour later on eastbound I-68 at the Crosstown Bridge. No injuries were reported, according to the Allegany County 911 Joint Communications Division.
